City walls and Kouřim Gate

History

At first, the walls were built of wood. But this did not provide sufficient protection for the city, so the
stone walls were built. The stones used for construction were from a quarry outside the city. The ramparts had a total of three gates, Liblická, Pražská and Kouřimská, all three were demolished
after year 1839. There is still a noticeable part of the walls and the bastion of Kouři gate in the city.

Contemporaneity

In the eastern and southeastern part of the perimeter od the old town, today you can see a continuous strip of sandstone walls with three bastions and the entrance of the Kouřim gate.
