Radovan Lukavský was born in 1919 into a poor family of a master carpenter. His mother was an amateur actress and maid and a strongly religious Catholic. He received a number of awards, such as the Meritorious Artist Award and the Meritorious Memberof National Academy of Sciences. Among his greatest awards are the Thalia Award or the Václav Havel Medal for Merit. In his honor they were after him named streets in Prague and Český Brod.
